Interview coordinated between LoriAnn and Dingo, drummer of Technicolour , via email. All band questions were answered by Jimi, lead singer, unless the questions were addressed to a particular band member then they were answered by that band member.
Since the formation of Technicolour, how would you describe how you have evolved artistically over the years?
Being a huge fan of music, new and old, I tend to keep up with what was and is going on. It gets me real inspired to hear a great track. Then I just start writing, take it to the band and off we go.
In your most recent album “People” there are several references to current pop culture. Why is it that you incorporated these influences in
your music?
I tend to dislike pop references if they don’t contribute to the story that’s being told. But if it paints a picture of time and place, then it’s different. In hiphop pop culture references don’t bother me at all though.
Out of all of your albums, which album would you say is your favorite
album? Why?
I think Only Shadows Dance is the best one overall. Best collection of songs, some of the production bothers me but I guess that always happens.
Listening to your music it is obvious that you draw inspiration from artists such as Michael Jackson and U2. How has their music influenced the music of Technicolour? Are their other artists that have also contributed to influencing your sound?
Michael Jackson didn’t start to inspire Technicolour until our second album, U2 has always been there. But I love all kinds of different stuff so who knows what Technicolour will sound in the future.
You have several dedicated fansites. What do you think about these fansites?
I think it’s great if our fans have the energy to do something creative.
While on tour, are there periods in which you would like to take the time to enjoy the country/city you are performing at? If so, is there any particular country or city that you would like to spend a little more time at, before heading on to your next gig?
Some places are more fun than others but you just try to keep yourself busy and entertained, you know.
Helsinki is known for its heavily dominated goth rock music scene. What do you think of the goth rock scene and how does your music differ from the music that is currently popular in Helsinki?
Being good friends with the 69 Eyes for a long time but that other than that I don’t know much about the scene. Then again all big cities have a lot of different scenes. I tend to drift comfortably from one to the
other.
If you cover one song by your favorite artist, what will the song be and by which artist? Please explain why you chose this song.
We’ve been playing Neil Young’s Rocking In the Free World forever. I don’t think there’s been one show that hasn’t ended with that one. It’s one of the greatest songs ever. And it’s actually kinda new. 1989. Sounds like it
could’ve been done in the 70’s or think of the White Stripes. They sound like that to me.
When creating an album, do you collaborate as a group on the lyrics and
music? Or is it the product of one individual?
I write all the lyrics and music and then we arrange the stuff together.
